The topic of Jinn in Islam has fascinated people for centuries. Stories about mysterious beings, possessions, haunted places, and supernatural experiences often circulate in movies, social media, and cultural folklore. Unfortunately, many of these stories are a result of  mixed truth with exaggeration, creating fear and chaos.

What Are Jinn in Islam?

 Jinn means something hidden from sight or concealed. Belief in the existence of Jinn is a fundamental part of our faith in Islam. This creation of Allah called Jinn is made from fire, while humans are made from dust. Likewise angels are made from light.

They are called “Jinn” as they are hidden from mankind. In the Quran there is a Surah on Jinn (part 72 of the Holy Quran).

Allah says in the Qur’an:

“and (Allah) created jinn from a smokeless flame of fire. ”
(Quran 55:15)

Nature of Jinn

Just like humans, Jinnat are also accountable for their deeds in front of the almighty and they have free will, can be good or evil and belong to different religious denominations based on the guidance they follow from humans. Not all Jins are bad but Shaitaan is a bad jinn. He disrespected the commands of Allah. When Allah asked his creations to bow down, Shaitan (or Satan) was the one who resisted.

Jinns gain knowledge from humans. Jinns have as many religions as humans. The struggles each human faces, they also face those (likely). 

“As for the jinn, We created them earlier from smokeless fire.”  [Quran15:27]

Quran Verses About Jinn

The Qur’an speaks about jinn in multiple chapters, and there is even an entire chapter named Surah Al-Jinn.

Allah says:

“Say, ˹O Prophet,˺ “It has been revealed to me that a group of jinn listened ˹to the Quran,˺ and said ˹to their fellow jinn˺: ‘Indeed, we have heard a wondrous recitation. It leads to Right Guidance so we believed in it, and we will never associate anyone with our Lord ˹in worship˺. ˹Now, we believe that˺ our Lord—Exalted is His Majesty—has neither taken a mate nor offspring, and that the foolish of us used to utter ˹outrageous˺ falsehoods about Allah. ”
(Quran 72:1-4)

This verse shows that jinn can hear, understand, and even accept Islam.

The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) neither recited the Qur’an to the Jinn nor did he see them. The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) went out with some of his Companions with the intention of going to the bazaar of ‘Ukaz And there had been (at that time) obstructions between satans and the news from the Heaven, and there were flung flames upon them. So satan went back to their people and they said: What has happened to you? They said: There have been obstructions created between us and the news from Heaven. And there have been flames flung upon us. They said: It cannot happen but for some (important) event. So traverse the eastern parts of the earth and the western parts and find out why it is that there have been obstructions created between us and the news from Heaven. 

They went forth and traversed the easts of the earth and its wests. Some of them proceeded towards Tihama and that is a nakhl towards the bazaar of ‘Ukaz and he (the Holy Prophet) was leading his Companions in the morning prayer. So when they heard the Qur’an. they listened to it attentively and said: It is this which has caused obstruction between us and news from Heaven. They went back to their people and said: O our people, we have heard a strange Qur’an which directs us to the right path; so we affirm our faith in it and we would never associate anyone with our Lord. And Allah, the Exalted and Glorious, revealed to His Apostle Muhammad (ﷺ):” It has been revealed to me (in the verse we saw above Quran 72:1)that a group of Jinn listened to it”  [Sahih muslim 449]

These Quran verses about jinn highlight that they, like humans, were created for worship and accountability. And they are not the provider. Allah is the only provider for all of his creations.

Difference Between Jinn and Shaitan

Many people confuse jinn with shayateen (devils), but there is an important difference between jinn and shaitan.

• Jinn are a complete creation with free will.
• Shaytan refers to rebellious and evil beings among jinn.
• Iblis (Satan) himself was from the jinn.

Allah says:

“And remember when We said to the angels, “Prostrate before Adam,” so they all did—but not Iblîs, who was one of the jinn, but he rebelled against the command of his Lord. Would you then take him and his descendants as patrons instead of Me, although they are your enemy? What an evil alternative for the wrongdoers to choose! I never called them to witness the creation of the heavens and the earth or even their own creation, nor would I take the misleaders as helpers. ”  (Quran 18:50-51)

So not every jinn is evil. Some are believers, while others are disbelievers.

Mufti Tariq Masood says, “Humans have more good qualities than bad ones. On the contrary, Jinns have more bad qualities than good. They are much more powerful than humans but they generally fear humans. In fact they become rebellious when humans fear or worship them. Hence, practices like seeking protection from Jinns or visiting Aamils are strongly discouraged.”

The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ taught Muslims protective supplications, remembrance of Allah, and recitation of the Qur’an.

The Prophet Muhammad said,

“Be mindful of Allah and Allah will protect you. Be mindful of Allah and you will find Him in front of you. If you ask, then ask Allah [alone]; and if you seek help, then seek help from Allah [alone]. And know that if the nation were to gather together to benefit you with anything, they would not benefit you except with what Allah had already prescribed for you. And if they were to gather together to harm you with anything, they would not harm you except with what Allah had already prescribed against you. The pens have been lifted and the pages have dried.” [Hadith 19, 40 Hadith an-Nawawi ]

This shows the spiritual protection is found in worship and remembrance of Allah. And everything is prewritten by Allah as He alone has rights over our lives.
