Who is Allah?

Allah is the Arabic word for One God and it denotes the Lord of the worlds, the Creator and the Sustainer. In Surah Az-Zumar (39:62), Allah says, ‘Allah is the Creator of all things, and he is, over all things, Disposer of affairs.’

In this verse Allah tells us that He is the Creator, Lord, Sovereign and Controller of all things; everything is subject to His dominion, power and guardianship. To Allah belongs the treasures of the heavens and the earth, which means that He is in control of all things and His is the dominion and to Him is the praise, and He is able to do all things.

Here, Al-Khaliq refers to measuring and proportioning, Al-Bari refers to inventing and bringing into existence what He has created and measured, and Al-Mussawwir, Who brings into existence anything He wills in the shape and form He decides. It is sure that none except Allah is able to measure, bring forth and create whatever He wills to come to existence’

The straight answer to the question, ‘Who is Allah?’ is given by Allah in the Qur’an in Surah Al-Ikhlas (112:1-4)

  • Say, ‘He is Allah, [Who is] One – (God is One & Unique and has no rivals, partners )
  • Allah, the Eternal Refuge (God is Perfect & Flawless – No limitations or weaknesses)
  • He neither begets nor is born, (God has no father, mother, sons, daughters or wives)
  • Nor is there to Him any equivalent. (No part of God is present in anyone or anything)

When we take a close look at this Surah, the word Al-Ahad is mentioned in the first verse which cannot be used for anyone in affirmation except Allah the Mighty and Majestic, because He is perfect in all of His attributes and actions. The second verse implies that Allah is the One who all of the creation depends upon for their needs and their requests.

The Surah also reveals to us that Allah created everything and owns everything, so how can He have a peer among His creatures who can be equal to Him, or a relative who can resemble Him.

Who is Muhammadﷺ?

Michael H. Hart said in his book, The 100: A Ranking Of The Most Influential Persons in History, ‘My choice of Muhammad ﷺ to lead the list of the world’s most influential persons may surprise some readers and may be questioned by others, but he was the only man in history who was supremely successful in both the religious and secular level.’

So, one could be concerned, what makes this man Muhammad ﷺ so extraordinary and why is he considered a revolutionary? Who is Muhammad ﷺ?

Allah sent all the Prophets and Messengers to call for worship of Allah alone and to bring people from darkness to light. Prophet Muhammad ﷺ was sent to a nation where, people made alterations and changes in the beliefs and laws, truth was extinguished and falsehood prevailed, oppression and evil became widespread and people needed religion to guide them to the straight path. This has been explained in the following verse,

‘And We have not sent down the Book (the Quran) to you (O Muhammad), except that you may explain clearly unto them those things in which they differ, and (as) a guidance and a mercy for a folk who believe.’

[al-Nahl 16:64]

Muhammad ﷺ, son of Abdullah, son of Abdul Muttalib, of the tribe of Quraysh was born in Makkah, in 571 CE. His father died before he was born and he was raised by his grandfather, and his uncle Abu Talib. He was known to have excellent conduct and character as a young man that he was called Al-Ameen (the trustworthy) and As-Sadiq (the truthful). He married Khadeeja, a wealthy business woman, a widow who was fifteen years older than him, at a young age. Their twenty-six years of marriage was a happy one.

Muhammad ﷺ received his first revelation when he ﷺ was meditating in the Hira cave, Angel Gabriel brought him the verse, ‘Read in the name of your Lord who created, Created man from a clinging substance. Read, and your Lord is the most Generous, Who taught by the pen, Taught man which he knew not.’ from Surah Al-Alaq. This was the beginning of Islam. Slowly, the message started spreading through the untiring efforts of the Prophet ﷺ who had fought many battles, stood firmly against evil and withstood all hate that was against him. A time came where he had to migrate from Makkah to Madina because the Makkans boycotted muslims. The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ spread Islam for a period of twenty three years, and by the end of it, he ﷺ had become the ruler of Arabia, Islam was reaching many places, and people were filled with thirst for knowledge to learn the way of the Prophet ﷺ.

He ﷺ was nothing but an orphan who was illiterate and blessed with no worldly goods, yet Allah made him such a way that according to every standard by which human greatness can be measured he was matchless; no person was ever greater.
